Many Businessmen who have given their heart to the Lord Jesus Christ and are
“Born Again” experience tremendous conflicts within themselves while learning to
live a life both as a Christian and a businessman.
There have been many “Clubs” and “Fellowships” formed through the years that bring
together businessmen who have and are encountering the same conflicts. Some of
them are very good at teaching biblically based truths to help guide the Christian
businessman, while others damage the truth of what it means to be a Christian in
the business world. The problem is that many clubs and fellowships teach you how
to have a better business through God, they do not teach you how to have an
intimate relationship with Jesus. Because they teach incorrectly, many of you are
placed in bondage and self doubt when your business goes through difficult times.
Your life with Jesus becomes crippled when your business struggles so you find
yourself trying different methods, thinking you can win God’s favor. You may
start to believe you are doing something wrong or that your heart is not right
with God. When your methods are unsuccessful you become hopeless and defeated.
You try to tithe more and increase your offerings, thinking that God will be
pleased and prosper you. You stand on the Bible and proclaim faith and still there
is no help. You try to believe that you are a son of God and that “if you have the
faith to believe” you deserve all that God wants to give you. The next thing that
follows is anger and the feeling that God does not care for you and you will never
be able to please Him. Before long, you may find you are blaming God for your
failure. You are disconnected from Jesus.
Some of you are very prosperous and successful businessmen. You give your tithes
faithfully; your offerings to mission work are always given without any question.
You might be a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, or Usher in your church. You
might be well respected in your church and community. You may be an exemplary
leader in every way. Honesty, Integrity and admiration are all associated with
your name. Unfortunately many Christians who are experiencing this kind of success
gauge themselves and their walk with God incorrectly. You may look at your
business success as proof that you are right with God and judge other Christians
who struggle in business and life as though they need to get their life on the
right path and they will receive from God as you have. This is very dangerous
thinking because you can find yourself, as a Christian, replacing your intimate
life with Jesus for a business or life plan that will consume your time and your
thoughts. You can have a disconnection from Jesus.
There are you businessmen who experience other struggles as Christians. You feel
guilty, and do not feel that you can be a businessman and a Christian in the truest
sense of the word because of the teaching you have heard. This happens to the most
successful as well as to the struggling Christians in business. You feel like
second-class Christians. You don’t feel the call of God to professional ministry.
You don’t want to be an Elder, Deacon or Sunday School Teacher. You don’t want to
be active in any ministry at all and you wonder if you can have a fulfilling
relationship with Jesus and still think and feel the way you do. Some of you feel
even worse because you have spouses that are actively involved in ministries in
the church and you feel guilty because you don’t have the desire or maybe confidence
to get involved. You may have heard Pastors say that “the call to the ministry is
the highest calling of God” and you do not feel it, so you examine yourself
incorrectly and separate yourself from Jesus because you do not think that you can
have a satisfying, loving, intimate, touchable, and real fellowship with Him. You
may feel pressure from other Christians to get involved in a ministry at the church
and you make the mistake of walking away from Jesus rather than walking away from
the stress that has been placed upon you from man and not God. Your guilt has
caused you to disconnect from Jesus.
Christian, there are a few things that are difficult for you to understand on your
own. You are a Businessman, not a pastor, teacher, evangelist, prophet or apostle.
That is not to say that you will stop telling anyone about Jesus, it simply means
that those vocations are not yours. The highest call of God is the call to
obedience. This call makes us all equal. As a Christian businessman you should
understand that you are no more than any other man and you are no less than any
other man. We all are children of God. We all are His bride! You must
understand what that means. He intensely desires an intimate fellowship with
you. He cares about your business only in so much as he cares about you!
You are His real interest. You are His delight, His heart, His desire. Any
Christian, whether you work at an office or in the field or any business in between
can experience intimacy with Jesus.
Your intimacy with Jesus is your Christian life. Business is your vocation. The
world can teach you how to be a successful businessman. Education, hard work,
dedication and management will bring you success in business. Whether you are a
small or large business owner, whether you are self- employed, work in finance,
retail, or part of a billion dollar international corporation, you can have the
same intimacy with Jesus that the twelve disciples, the Apostle Paul or Stephen
the Martyr had.
It is your life with God and not what you do in business that makes you different
from the businessman who has not given his heart to Jesus. Who built the Ark?
Who made the tents or shelters used by Abraham and his descendants? Who made the
clothes? Who farmed the crops for food that was eaten by Jesus in His lifetime
on earth? Who raised and tended the livestock? Who fished? Who traded the
commodities of the time? Who built the temple? Who owned the Inn where Jesus
was born? Who owned the ships that Jesus and the Apostles traveled upon? Who
owned the donkey that Jesus rode when he entered Jerusalem? Who owned the tomb
where Jesus was buried? Who owned the homes where Paul and the other Apostles
stayed and were fed on their many travels? Who makes the Bibles we read today?
How are churches built? All of these things were done by businessmen of one sort
or another. There can be no life or experience on earth without the businessman.
Your vocation is no less important to mankind than the professional minister, but
you need more than your jobs to satisfy your life. You need intimacy with Jesus.
