Pastors, you have the most difficult vocation of the five fold ministries.
Daily, you have the unique job of keeping the body of Christ together and
growing spiritually, a task that is virtually impossible. Your ministry
is a daily endeavor of management. Several times in a week you have to
deliver to your congregation the message that you believe God has given
you, and then have faith that the people are ready to receive it. This
can be a very stressful process. Added to these responsibilities is the
scheduling and monitoring of the Teacher and the Evangelist so that your
congregation will grow with a balanced knowledge of God. The Apostles
and Prophets ministries will be addressed at a later time.
Many Pastors are concerned with church growth, missionary work and outreach
ministries. You may be one of the Pastors with exceptional management
skills and so your church is flourishing. Your ability to hire the right
assistant pastors, teachers, worship leaders and staff has enabled your
ministry to work harmoniously. You seem to have it all, a subject to
teach and a staff to teach it well, yet you lack the relationship that you
once had with Jesus. Your ability to control your ministry obstructs you
from intimacy with Him.
Like many Pastors, you may not be a very good manager and you struggle
everyday in the ministry. Your fellowship with Jesus has been reduced
to you praying continually about your church, church elders, deacons,
Sunday school and choir. It is difficult to get your staff and
congregation to work together with you in order to move in the direction
you feel God wants lead. Your prayers seem to go unanswered and sometimes
you just want to give up. The stress of managing your ministry has caused
you to have a disconnection with Jesus.
Pastor, when you find yourself disconnected from Jesus, you have a very
difficult time reconnecting with him because you’re restricted by your own
methods, teachings and doctrines. You have created your own bondage and
you need help getting out. Pastor, you have received revelation from God,
but one revelation on any subject is sure to be followed by more.
Because of the revelation you received, you mistakenly believe that if
you approach Him in any other way you would be violating God’s teaching
and will.
Pastor, Jesus is not a method. Jesus is not a teaching. Jesus is not a
doctrine. Jesus is not a principle by which we live. Jesus is not any
of the Gifts. Jesus is not the fruit of the Spirit. Jesus is the
timeless and never changing “I am.” He has never lost His desire for
intimacy with you. He loves you and He has tremendous longsuffering for
you. You are His shepherds, the ones He trusts His beloved bride to.
There is not a word that could give the proper emphasis to the amount of
love and desire for intimacy He has for you. And you need to feel
intimacy with Him as you once did. You need to know the personal
fellowship that can only be experienced between you and Jesus, Jesus and
you. You need to feel His love for you and your love for him.
It does not matter if your church has a membership of 15,000 or 15. It
does not matter if you are in the city and your services are broadcast
on national television or you are in a mountain town ministering to a
local Indian tribe. The pastoral ministry is sometimes the most difficult
job to have and maintain an intimate connection with Jesus.
