Many young people have a strong desire for truth, and truth is a wonderful thing
to be desired. Unfortunately, truth can be very elusive and the quest for it can
often take you to paths that lead far away from truth. John, a disciple of Jesus,
wrote in his gospel that Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life.”
While you seek the truth, you may encounter these words said by Jesus and they
will raise many difficult questions in your mind. These will need to be answered
before you can understand and believe what He said about himself.
It is hard to believe in a loving God when you look at world events and see the
cruelty of life. When you see human suffering and people experiencing all manner of
pain it is hard to believe that “God is love” or Jesus is “the way, the truth and
the life.” How can anyone believe what Jesus said about himself when many young
people have or know someone who has experienced vile abuses such as war, murder,
torture, beatings, starvation, thirst, or rape and other sexual abuses by Church
leaders, parents, family members, friends or strangers? There are earthquakes,
famines, drought, tsunamis, floods, pestilence, hurricanes, and tornados that kill
people and destroy homes and shatter lives. More times than not, these experiences
cause one to feel attacked by the world and a God who would control it. This often
leads people to disconnect from Jesus.
Some of you grew up in Christian homes and you innocently believed in Jesus, gave
your heart to Him and had very real spiritual experiences. Now, your perception of
God is that He does not exist or that if he does, He is cruel and unjust. You have
tried to prove He is real by praying to Him and asking Him to give you something you
need or show who He is in other ways. You feel He has failed to prove Himself and
you now believe that He does not care about you. You now feel disconnected from
Jesus.
Many of you young adults who have grown up in Christian homes have turned away from
Jesus because your parents made you live by rules and a certain code of conduct
which you now associate with Jesus. Then, as you grew up you began to see hypocrisy
in your parents and those who, when you where young, you looked up to. Your parents
and church leaders had formed an ideal in your mind as to how a Christian ought to
be and how they should live. Now you have discovered that those who helped form
those ideals in you are not necessarily living the ideal Christian life themselves.
You have discovered a truth and it has caused you to be disconnected from Jesus.
This truth is that people, whether Christians or not, are flawed.
Some of you turned away because you wanted to be free to do what your friends do.
When the vices of alcohol, drugs and sex were introduced to you, you participated in
them because the temptation was too difficult to resist. Even the strongest willed
person can give in to these temptations when your friends, people you look up to,
not only indulge themselves in these things but ask you to do the same. But now you
find yourself unfulfilled by these things no matter how much you take in. You may
find yourself going deeper and deeper to find satisfaction, only to find yourself
more and more unhappy. You are disconnected from Jesus.
You may have discovered the teaching of other religions or philosophers on your quest
and formed the belief that there is no one religion but all have some truth. All
religions and philosophies appear to teach truth about living a better life. Yet
only one can offer the truth about eternal life. You may have discovered that
walking down these many paths, while on your exploration for truth have only caused
you to be confused. All the teachings from other religions and philosophers have
caused you to be disconnected from Jesus.
While you are in this learning phase of your life you are going to have many questions.
You want answers to life’s questions, you want to know the truth, you want the truth
to be confirmed to you, and you want evidence or proof that what you know is true.
This is because you want to have confidence in your beliefs and you want them to be
established in your life. There will come a time in your life when you will live by
the understanding and wisdom which come by experience and time lived, but that time
is not now.
Brother or sister, Jesus loves you and he wants to have an intimate and loving
relationship with you. He has never turned His back on you, neither for all of your
questioning, nor for your explorations of the world with your back to Him. Who He
always desires is you. You are His child. You cannot escape His love for you. He
will not punish you because your quest has led you away from Him. He wants you to
know Him and love Him as much as He knows and loves you. He waits for you to want
Him the way He wants you. He wants to answer all your questions about Himself, the
condition of the world and the personal pain caused by others and yourself. You
need to reconnect with Jesus.
